Presidents Report 2016 – 2017

What a year!
At the beginning of this financial year I was seriously worried about our club’s future from any direction I looked at it.
It has been an enormous year for Murray Bridge Gliding Club Inc. and I hope and trust a pivotal one in terms of viability, direction, equipment and future prospects.
The year started with continuing overheating/engine problems with FFQ.  The ongoing saga of serviceability plagued continuity of training for new members.  The pending retirement of our CFI, Lindsay Tilley hung over the club with no absolute prospects for a replacement.  The CASA driven GFA requirements on all clubs posed additional burdens seemingly too much to bear.
Then, with significant input and encouragement from Steve Burgess, we decided to make an offer to the Cadet Association for their Grob 109, VH-GUD.  This offer was commensurate with what we could afford and consideration of the alternative, VH-FFN available from NSW.  In the absence of any other  offers, ours was accepted and we purchased GUD with the sole intention of keeping it for spare parts and maintaining serviceability of FFQ.
No sooner had  we got used to the idea of having a spare aircraft that we suffered another major incident with FFQ rendering it completely unserviceable without major repairs.  Fortunately we had a spare aircraft and were able to resume activity almost immediately with GUD and many thanks to all those who helped make that happen.
The next hurdle was Lindsay’s retirement as CFI.  Various ideas/options were bandied about including discussions  with GFA, and some other clubs.  Ultimately, Steve Burgess has graciously, if not reluctantly, stepped up to plate to save the day and our bacon.  Steve has subsequently been ratified by GFA and further, is undergoing additional Instructor training to bring him up to the highest level and standard of GFA instructors.  Many thanks Steve and also to Lindsay for the many years of service provided to MBGC Inc.
With further input from Steve Burgess, Mark Morgan and Chris Sperou, we then had the good fortune of receiving a significant Insurance Payout for FFQ in lieu of a write off which left us with the FFQ unserviceable aircraft for future spare parts.  This payment has subsequently facilitated the opportunity to also purchase VH-FFN from NSW giving us potentially two serviceable airframes and one spare parts airframe.  Hopefully this will enable us to keep one aircraft airborne at all times and the luxury of servicing the other at greater leisure as opportunity permits.
All of these significant events have placed the club in an entirely new position to be able to contemplate and plan its future in a way previously not possible.  I won’t allude to those plans in this report as they remain a work in progress to be transitioned into the new year.
Thanks to all who continue to make this Club viable.  I’m really proud of you.
Rob Wintulich
President Murray Bridge Gliding Club Inc.

2.2  Treasurer
(hard copy of accounts circulated - to be audited in November)
Greg reported 2016-17 trends as unusual because of large pay outs and purchases, so the accounts suggest imbalance income:expenditure
cash in hand to cover coming expenses,
reinvestments can be at call for upcoming capital works.

As airframe work  poroceeds, treasurer to update insurance to match reality of airframes mix

Discussion identified that a few individuals have overdue membership account, so are not 'members', but may have GFA obligations relying on a club member status.
Treasurer will liaise with GFA.

The meeting confirmed that club practice for 'non-flying' Harry to be 'GFA family' member; at $50pa, this club rate recognises for services rendered.

Treasurer advised that state government (Rec&Sport Dept) has grants for increasing sport participation: MBGC might ask for 'bringing 2nd airframe into service'
